The festive season is upon us and holiday events are in full swing around Charleston. From music to theatre, caroling, and shopping, there are endless opportunities to celebrate the season with your friends, family and community throughout the holidays. Here’s a roundup of some of the best events going on around town that will get you into the holiday spirit!
Vienna Light Orchestra
For just four nights, from December 15th to the 18th, the world-renowned Vienna Light Orchestra will bring the magic of candlelight and music to the South Carolina Society Hall, just a block from Rainbow Row. In a short, but sweet hour-long performance, you’ll experience the beauty of over 2000 flickering candles illuminating the musicians as they play Christmas classics. Let the dulcet sounds of Greensleeves, White Christmas, and Silent Night coupled with the beautiful setting enchant you. Learn more about the event on their website and get your tickets today to see these musical maestros live.
A Christmas Carol
No holiday season is complete without a visit from Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Charleston Stage presents “A Christmas Carol” at The Historic Dock Street Theatre from November 30 to December 21 and it’s not to be missed. This brand new production features colorful sets, costumes, and an exciting and innovative holiday score. Ages 8 and up.
James Island’s Holiday Festival of Lights
A tradition in the Lowcountry, visiting the James Island Holiday Festival of Lights is the perfect way to illuminate the long winter nights. There are multiple ways to experience the festival, the simplest being driving through the three miles of twinkling lights in the shapes of your favorite holiday characters. If your family is looking to get more hands-on, there are also sand castles, train rides for kids, gingerbread houses and more to explore. Don’t miss your chance to see it – it’s open every night until December 31!
Chanukah in the Square
On December 18th, celebrate Chanukah with the Charleston Jewish community. Organized by the Center for Jewish Life, the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston, and the City of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs partner, this family-friendly event will include a Menorah lighting, latkes, live music, games, and more. All are welcome to attend this early evening event in Marion Square Park.
Holiday Pops
Celebrate the sounds of the season with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra as they present their annual holiday pops concert at the beautiful Gaillard Auditorium. You’ll listen to everything from classics like “Deck the Halls” to selections from “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” There will even be special guest appearances and performances in this uplifting concert. It is sure to be a magical night for the whole family.
