With their deep hues and sparkling connotations, jewel tones create a luxurious ambiance at home. While neutrals have been very popular in recent years, we love the unexpected flair of a room decorated in the colors of precious gemstones. From amethyst to emerald, ruby, and sapphire, jewel tones bring feel-good energy and a sumptuous flair to lacquered cabinets, wallpaper, and velvet furniture.
We believe more is more when it comes to creating your own personal jewel box, which is why we’re highlighting our favorite methods of incorporating these rich tones into your home decor.
Add Big Doses of Color Throughout
With jewel tones, it’s very hard to hold back without creating a feeling of incongruity. For example, one emerald chair in a neutral room will look out of place. If you are planning to use jewel tones, be sure to incorporate them throughout the room as well as throughout the rest of your home. There should be a flow from one room to the next and while some rooms may be more decadent than others, it’s important that they all share a similar level of vibrancy. You can also mix jewel tones with various other shades in the same palette, as was done by our interior designers in this blue living room.
Combine Several Jewel Tones
While you can use one bold color as an accent throughout your room, jewel tones look even more sumptuous when combined with other jewel tones. Layering sapphire with garnet and citrine creates drama and dimension that it wouldn’t achieve on its own. Just remember to keep it to a few complementary jewel tones to avoid clashing. You can always consult a color wheel if you are in doubt – choose colors that are opposite one another on the wheel.
Embrace Rich Textures and Materials
When it comes to decorating with jewel tones, think opulent fabrics and rich textures. Look for fabrics that have a bit of weight to them, as this will add to the luxurious feel you’re going for. Velvet, silk, and brocade are all excellent choices. Glass and lacquered furniture also work really well with jewel tones, adding radiance to your jewel box.
Let Metallic Accents Shine
On a similar note, you can highlight the luxurious nature of jewel tones by adding some metallic accents to your home. Choose one primary metal, either gold or silver, and pick out some pieces that will work well with your existing decor. A gold mirror, like our Olive Branch Mirror, or chandelier, like our Nottaway Chandelier adds decadence to a room featuring jewel tones.
Create Contrast with Black and White
Another approach to harmonizing your jewel tones is to sprinkle them in alongside black and white decor. The contrast of black and white against the deeply hued colors creates a beautiful stage for your jewel-toned decor to shine. It’s dramatic and contemporary, creating a truly eye-catching space.
