Color Outside the Lines: Styling Stripes at Home

Classic, clean, and versatile, stripes are widely beloved in interior design and fashion. Not only are they easy to mix with other patterns, but they provide a fresh, preppy aesthetic that suits both modern and traditional homes. Our team of designers frequently use stripes as a clever tool to open up small spaces and create eye-catching pops of interest.

Here are some of our favorite tricks to incorporate stripes into your home!

Stripes in art

Use Stripes to Create the Illusion of Space

For smaller rooms, narrow stripes are your best friend. When used correctly, these slender lines can elongate a space, making it feel larger and more open than it actually is. Vertical stripes, in particular, can create the illusion of higher ceilings, while horizontal stripes can make a room seem wider.

Try Different Types of Stripes

While stripes suit a variety of spaces, there are some that work better than others based on their size, color and configurations. In general, a good rule of thumb to remember is that the larger your space, the wider your stripes can be. Wide stripes in a large room create a bold statement, whereas smaller stripes are perfect for more cozy spaces. Keep in mind that wallpaper with small stripes in a large room can be dizzying!

Use Stripes in High Traffic Areas to Conceal Dirt

One of the best things about stripes is that they are great at hiding stains. Particularly in rooms with a lot of traffic, striped rugs, upholstery and wall coverings are a good idea. Our designers frequently use stripes in hallways, living rooms, and outdoor areas where a lot of footfall occurs.

Try Mixing Stripes with a Print

For those looking to add a bit more flair to your space, consider pairing your stripes with a fun print. This combination can bring a lively contrast to your space, balancing the rigidity of stripes with the softness of a pattern. For example, you can mix striped pillows with a botanical print duvet, creating a bed that feels fresh and artistic.

Use Navy and White Stripes for a Classic Look

For a timeless approach to using stripes, you can’t go wrong with navy and white stripes. They have an old world charm that recalls beach towels and umbrellas on the French Riviera. Whether used for upholstery on a chair or curtains, or as a wall or floor covering, this elegant and classic combo adds an instant dose of style.

Mad About Stripes!

More than just aesthetically pleasing, stripes can be a powerful tool in making your interiors feel spacious, dynamic, and stylish. They can mix and match with other patterns, or hold their own. However you choose to bring in stripes, take heart in knowing that they’ll never go out of style.
