Seasonal Shift: Preparing Your Home for Fall and Winter

We often think about spring as a time of refreshment, but fall and winter bring their own sense of renewal when it comes to home decor. Fall is the quintessential season of transition, and we love making small changes to our homes to make them feel more cozy and warm. If you have yet to give your home decor an update, here are some ideas to create a homey haven this fall and winter.

Branches Instead of Flowers

Spring and summer are synonymous with florals, and while there are beautiful fall and winter flowers, we prefer to add branches to our holiday arrangements for a more distinctive, elevated look. Branches of all kinds bring an organic, sculptural quality to arrangements, adding texture and height to create visual interest in a space. They also have the advantage of lasting longer than fresh flowers.

New Accent Pillows

Switching out your accent pillows is a simple way to refresh the look and feel of a room for the fall and winter. Now is the perfect time to lean into cozy, thick materials like velvet and wool. You might even include some holiday-themed pillows with Christmas plaid or a fall tree motif, like our Autumn Orchard Hand Painted Bolster.

Drape Throw Blanket

Bedding blankets and throws, like our Brentwood Throw will help keep you and your guests snug this fall and winter. Drape two or three over the back of your sofa and living room chairs, add them to beds around the house, and store some in guest room closets in case they are needed on chilly nights. Opt for blankets and throws that match your color palette, or take a festive approach with holiday-themed patterns.

Twinkling Candlelight

Lighting a candle instantly makes a room feel more atmospheric. Now is the perfect time to add some tabletop pieces, like taper or pillar candles, on your dining table and scatter scented candles around the home. If you want the look of candlelight without the mess, consider using flameless tea candles inside a stylish glass candle jar.

Layer Rugs

Have you ever tried layering rugs at home? This creates an interesting play of pattern and texture for a one-of-a-kind rug look that makes a room look instantly elevated. We recommend placing small wool or sheepskin rugs on top of larger natural rugs, introducing a contrast of materials. This layering technique creates a quick seasonal update that you can tweak from year to year.

A Variety of Natural Wood Tones

With its natural grain patterns and warm neutral tones, wood brings an innate sense of comfort during the fall and winter. Even if you already have wooden flooring and furniture, you can add other wood elements like baskets, trays, sculptural decorative pieces, and candlesticks. At this time of year when we are often indoors, it helps to foster this strong sense of connection with nature to keep us grounded.
