Maximalism at Home: A More is More Aesthetic

More is more in 2024… As we look to the new year, we’re leaning towards bold colors, intricate patterns, and unique textures that create spaces that truly feel personal. Dating to the Victorian era, Maximalism is a popular design style of creating over-the-top joyful, exciting spaces. If you have been considering giving your home a refresh, our team of Charleston interior designers compiled a few ideas that will help you incorporate a maximalist design philosophy. Here’s how to fill your home with warmth, energy, and color.

Mix Bold Colors and Patterns

Maximalism is all about the blend of bold colors and patterns, and while an air of caution must be taken when doing so, there’s always room for experimentation. You can either start by adding in one element at a time, combining different hues and patterns to see what works. Or, you can pull together your favorite paint chips and fabric options and hold them up to get a good sense of the outcome. Stop by our design center to browse hundreds of fabric options in person.

Create Interesting Layers

Layering is a key component to maximalist design. Whether it’s layering two patterned rugs on top of one another, or an abstract work of art on a floral wallpaper, mixing contrasting elements can be very visually striking. Maximalist homes often have a variety of finishes as well, from lacquered furniture to fuzzy faux sheepskin pillows and gold leaf lamps. This bold approach to layering adds visual interest to a room while also making it feel funky and bespoke.

Add in Ornate Accents

Embrace the unexpected with accents that make a statement. Metallic finishes on mirrors and tables, grand chandeliers with sparkling crystal pieces, and antique wingback chairs are all on the table when you’re creating a maximalist space. If you’re hosting a dinner party, go all in on the tablescape and centerpiece – the more Instagrammable, the better.

Make it Intentional

Finally, remember that just because you have the opportunity to pull together everything but the kitchen sink doesn’t mean you should. The more colors and patterns you are bringing together, the more consideration is required to keep things from clashing. We recommend choosing one focal point to begin with, whether that is a large work of art, a bookshelf, or a statement wall. Then, design with elements around that. Every item, color, and pattern that you add in should contribute to the narrative of your space.

Going All-In with Maximalist Design

Maximalism is more than a design style; it’s a riot of rich colors, patterns, and personal taste. This style is meant to be fun and flamboyant and can only be achieved with an all-in mentality.
