From Dull to Dazzling: Hallway Decorating Ideas

Often overlooked as transitional spaces, hallways are more than just walkways to the rest of your home. Rarely are they considered the main event, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore them. A good hallway design should flow with the rest of the home and it can even serve as a focal point. We know it can be tricky to deck the halls in a unique way, which is why we’ve created this list of stylish hallway ideas to inspire you.

Warm Up Tile and Hardwood Floors with Runners

No one likes to step from a cozy carpeted bedroom straight onto a cold hallway floor in the morning. One of the easiest ways to warm up hallways is to add a long floor runner. A runner rug creates a soft place to step while also adding bold color, pattern, and texture. At any of our three Charleston design and furniture stores, you can find rugs that can be cut to a custom size to suit your floor space. Take a look at our collection of rugs online, and be sure to stop by in-store!

Add Light Fixtures to Create a Welcoming Atmosphere

There’s no need for a harsh overhead light in hallways. You aren’t cooking, doing your makeup, reading, or doing anything else that requires bright lighting. Recessed lighting should only be used when you need the spotlight to complete detailed tasks. Even if you have a dark hallway, you can still illuminate it softly with warm accent lighting.

Your hallway lighting can be bright, or it can be more gentle. Wall sconces are a perfect choice because they throw enough light for you to see where you are going without being overpowering. You can choose from an infinite number of designs, from sconces with woven shades like our Coastal Living Ariel Sconce to more industrial silhouettes. A few of these will add instant flair to bare walls. Or, you could even install pendant lights if you have high ceilings in a long hallway.

Mirrors to Make a Space Feel Larger

Hallways aren’t known for being spacious, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make them appear to be so. One way of making a small space feel more expansive is to install a mirror or two. The mirror can be at one end of the hallway or in a central part of the hallway over a small table or console. It will not only create an additional sense of space but will reflect artificial and natural light to illuminate your hallway.

Bold Wallpapers and Textural Treatments

Say no to boring hallway walls. Interior designers recommend staying away from darker wallpaper or paint and opting for a hint of bright color instead. Or, choose a neutral textural wallpaper that will provide a modern look. Don’t leave your hallway design until last – it should be a priority like any other room.

Show Off Your Personal Style with a Gallery Wall

Hallways aren’t just a place to hang all your leftover art. A well-decorated hallway should be given the same care and consideration as any other room. Consider creating your own art gallery-style showcase of paintings or art prints placed down the length of the hall. You can coordinate them by theme or color; curating an exhibition that will make guests stop to think. Or, you can always hang family photographs for a more personal touch. If the artwork needs it, you can always install a picture light to bring more attention to the piece.

Add Visual Interest with a Mini Library

One of our favorite ways to create high-impact hallways is to install bookshelves along the length of the hall. This not only provides easy access for the whole family to your library but is a way of storing your books without needing a separate library.

Creative Passageways That Delight

From the grand entrance of your home to the tiny corridors that connect your bedrooms, every area of the home deserves to be seen and enjoyed. We don’t often pay much attention to the spaces in between, but they matter more than you think. Keeping these hallway decor ideas in mind, you can always reach out to our design team for guidance. Stop by our Charleston design store, we’re happy to help you create inviting and beautiful corridors that reflect your style.
