If you’ve been feeling like your closet is getting out of control and you can never find what you are looking for, we’re here to help. Whether you have a small closet, or are blessed with your own walk-in closet, a few organizational tips can help make the most of the space you have. Let’s explore some practical strategies to declutter and enhance your closet space.
Declutter
Before you do anything else, the first step to an organized closet is to Marie Kondo for your wardrobe. Clearing out items you don’t wear is critical to being able to appreciate the items you do wear. A general rule is that if you haven’t worn something in a year, it is time to donate or sell it. Think of it this way, not only does your old clothing get a new life, but you get to have more shelf space for things you want and that you will wear.
Color Coordinate
One of the easiest methods of organizing your closet is by color. Not only does this make it easier to get dressed, but it’s very aesthetically satisfying as well. Consider arranging clothes from light to dark shades. You’ll never struggle to find a white button-down or black pair of pants again.

Make Use of the Top of Your Closet
Maximize the often-underutilized top shelf of your closet by adding fabric bins or baskets. Storage boxes are great for keeping seasonal items and extra linens safe at the top of the closet. If you are a hat person, you could also place a few hat racks with your favorite pieces for easy access.
Shoe Organizer
Never let your shoes pile up on the floor. While a shoe rack on the floor might work for a short time, it’s not enough space for most of us to store an entire shoe collection. Likely, the floor will soon become a big pile of shoes, which isn’t good for either the shoes or the state of your closet. Instead, invest in a vertical shoe organizer with plenty of slots for all of your footwear. If you are trying to create extra space in the closet, you can get a shoe rack that hangs on the back of a door. Otherwise, a shoe rack with cubbies for each pair of shoes is ideal. For your nicest shoes, you might want to store them in their shoe boxes, which you can stack on top of your wardrobe.
Matching Hangers
It’s such a simple tip, but a professional organizer will always recommend buying good hangers that match. To make your entire closet feel cohesive, throw away all your old unmatching hangers. We personally love cream velvet hangers, as they provide a neutral and stylish base for your clothes. Unlike wood hangers, the velvet holds onto slippery materials, from formal wear to the straps of tank tops.
Make Sure Everything is Visible
Finally, even if you are working with limited space, everything in your closet should be visible. Are there some belts tucked away in the back that you can’t quite see? Are your handbags all showing at least a side so that you can easily find them? Every clothing item and accessory, including smaller items should have a specific place. Otherwise, you’ll end up forgetting about it and not wearing it for a year. If you need more open shelving, clear storage containers, or hangers, now is the time to add those. No more ‘out of sight, out of mind’ when it comes to your wardrobe!
