Color Your Open Plan: Choosing the Perfect Palette

In interior design, color can be used to set the mood, define space, create dramatic focal points, or add small pops of interest. It is particularly useful in an open-plan space as it provides a means of delineating separate living areas. However, there’s a fine line between making an expansive open-plan room feel more intimate and blocking off the sense of flow. To help you choose the perfect shades for your space, we’ve compiled some key considerations and colors to consider.

Start with a Mood

What will your space be used for and how do you want it to feel? Deciding on a color palette will come down to whether you want an airy space, one that is more cozy, or one that makes a dramatic statement. Think about what mood you would like your space to embody and select colors that complement it.

Soft Pastels

If you’re aiming for a more gentle, relaxed ambiance, a soft pastel color palette will bring life and color to your space without being too bold and dramatic. Sky blue, light green, pale yellow, and lavender can create fresh spaces that feel spring-ready. You can alternate one of these colors with white walls, or use them as accents throughout the room.

Neutrals

Neutrals are the most common choice for open-plan spaces. They leave a space feeling open and airy, while still bringing a level of warmth. You can mix and match beige, off-white, and greige without worrying about clashing tones.

Earth Tones

If you want a warm, inviting space, earth tones are another great choice that also happen to be trending this year. Use terracotta in one area of your room and mustard yellow or chocolate brown in another. These colors add character in an understated way, bringing out the cozy atmosphere of your space.

Pro Tip: Use Area Rugs to Define Spaces

If you want to create a contrast between two areas, whether it’s a living and dining space or a dining and kitchen, using area rugs is an easy method of achieving this. Try using complimenting colors in different textures or weaves like wool and polypropylene to visually and practically define different zones in your open floor plan. For example, a plush wool rug for your living area and a flat woven performance rug under your dining table.
